Rowing Report

During the last week, every one of the Boat Club’s crews have been in action, delivering some promising results with only two weeks to go until National Schools’ Regatta.

On Sunday 5 May, the J16A crew won Wallingford Regatta by 3 seconds from KCS.  The 2nd VIII won its heat before finishing a creditable fourth place in the J18 category, behind only the first eights of other schools.  The 1st VIII, racing in the top-tier Challenge Eights event, finished third behind Leander Club’s Grand Challenge Cup eight (containing OP and multiple U19 and U23 world champion Douwe de Graaf) and the Thames Rowing Club crew that finished fourth at the Head of the River where SPS finished 11th.

On Saturday 11 May, the 3rd VIII raced at Borne at Chiswick Regatta and won the J18 eights event, beating Kew House School’s 1st VIII in the final.

Also on Saturday 11 May, the J14s and J15s headed to Bedford in force for Bedford Regatta.  The J15As, J15Bs and J15Cs all won their events, each beating their counterparts from Abingdon in the finals.  Meanwhile the J15D eight split into two coxed fours, in a preview of their National Schools’ plans, and faced some tough competition from the two eventual finalists: the B boats of Eton and Abingdon.  The J14As beat The Grange, Norwich School and Abingdon on their way to their final, but were narrowly beaten by Hampton.  The J14B crew won its event, beating Radley in the final, and the J14C crew also won theirs, after a very close battle with Hampton.  The J14D crew, racing in the third octuple event with the J14Cs, were knocked out by Radley, who later gave the J14Cs their tightest race of the day in the semifinal.
